How to Get to Fulidhoo

Reaching a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean sounds like it should be complicated. Fulidhoo is the happy exception. It sits close enough to the capital to reach in about an hour by fast boat, yet far enough to feel a world away the moment you step off the jetty.

This guide walks you through the whole journey, from the runway at Malé to the sand at Fulidhoo, whichever way you choose to travel. If you would rather not think about any of it, that is exactly what our island team is here for, and we say so at the end.

Where Fulidhoo actually is

Fulidhoo is the northernmost inhabited island of Vaavu Atoll, roughly 55 kilometres, about 35 miles, south of Malé. In practical terms that is around an hour on a speedboat across open, reef-flecked water, or a slower and very scenic passage on the public ferry.

Vaavu is one of the Maldives’ least developed atolls, which is a large part of Fulidhoo’s charm. You are not threading through a crowded resort belt to get here. You are heading out to a quieter corner of the country where the reefs are healthy, the lagoons are calm, and the island itself is small enough to walk end to end in a few minutes.

Step one: landing at Velana International Airport

Every journey to Fulidhoo begins at Velana International Airport, Malé, code MLE. It is worth knowing that the airport has its own island, Hulhulé, separate from Malé city and from Fulidhoo. Nothing you do at the airport puts you directly on a boat to Fulidhoo, so a little planning here saves a lot of standing around later.

Two things matter on arrival:

  • Arrange your onward transfer before you fly. There is no public boat straight from the airport to a local island like Fulidhoo. Whether you travel on by speedboat or public ferry, the sensible move is to have it confirmed in advance. It is the single easiest way to avoid an unplanned night in Malé.
  • You will be met. When your transfer is booked through us, our representative meets you on arrival and walks you to the right jetty, so there is no guesswork with your bags in the heat.

With that sorted, you have two ways to make the crossing.

The fast way: speedboat

The speedboat is how most guests reach Fulidhoo, and it is the one we recommend for a smooth arrival. The crossing takes about one hour and ten minutes, so you can land in the morning and be swimming off the beach by lunchtime.

Shared speedboats to Fulidhoo generally run twice a day, commonly around late morning and mid afternoon, on every day except Friday, when the schedule is reduced. Departures leave from the boat jetties by the airport or from a jetty in Malé, depending on the operator, which is exactly the kind of detail we confirm for you when you book.

A word on timing, because it catches people out. If your flight lands in the late afternoon, you may miss the last speedboat of the day, and there is no evening service. If your inbound flight is a late one, either plan a night in Malé or let us know your arrival details early so we can line up the best option.

The scenic, unhurried way: the public ferry

If you are travelling on a budget, or you simply like the slower rhythm of local life, the government atoll ferry is a lovely way to arrive. It is a proper Maldivian dhoni-style ferry used by islanders as well as travellers, so the journey itself is part of the experience.

The trade is time and flexibility. The ferry runs on set days only, typically three mornings a week, and takes around three and a half hours, often calling at Maafushi on the way. Because it does not run daily, it needs to slot into your flight dates rather than the other way around. Confirm the current days and departure point before you commit, as local schedules are adjusted from time to time.

For most guests arriving with a fixed holiday window, the speedboat wins on ease. For unhurried travellers with time to spare, the ferry is a memorable and gentle introduction to the pace of Vaavu.

Times and days above are indicative. Boat schedules in the Maldives shift with the season and the operator, so we always confirm the live timetable with you before you travel.

The simplest option of all: let us arrange it

Here is the shortcut. We run our own island transfers, so when you stay with us you do not have to work any of this out on your own. We arrange your boat, meet you at Velana on arrival, and share the current schedule the moment your dates are set, so all you have to do is step off the plane and let the journey carry you to the island.

Tell us your flight details when you book, especially your arrival time, and we will match you to the right boat and make sure someone is waiting for you at the other end.
